North Dakota state legislator Liz Conmy, pilot killed in Minneapolis plane crash
A North Dakota state representative and her friend were killed when the small plane they were in slammed into the ground and burst into flames just after takeoff Saturday.
Lawmaker Liz Conmy, a 67-year-old mom of four, and pilot pal Joe Cass were the only two souls aboard the doomed Beech F33A when it crashed and burned in Minnesota just before noon, according to authorities and reports.
“Kjersti and I are saddened by this tragic loss and offer our deepest condolences to her family, friends and fellow legislators,” North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong said in a statement.
“We ask North Dakotans to join us in keeping them in our prayers.”
Video of the tragedy obtained by Fox 9 showed the plane hit the ground and erupt into flames in the residential area.
The plane had just taken off from Crystal Airport — a shade north of Minneapolis — before it spiraled down in Brooklyn Park, said city police Inspector Matt Rabe.
“I was in the house, in my bedroom, and my daughter was eating cereal at the kitchen table, and there was a really loud boom,” said resident Ashley Capp, who lives across the street, according to Fox 9.
Another neighbor, Kim Clark, told the station there was a “huge, huge fire” at the scene.
“And then everybody started calling 911, and some people were getting close to see if there were anybody alive,” she said. “But then it kind of started to spark, and the flames started to get bigger.”
Investigators haven’t determined the cause of the crash.
The political party that Conmy belonged to said in an X post that it is “completely heartbroken and gutted.
“Her death is a profound loss for our state,” the North Dakota Democratic-Nonpartisan League Party said of the former farmer and Minnesota State University teacher.
“As a lawmaker, she championed public education, the environment, and transparency.”
The political party is an affiliate of the national Democratic Party.
Conmy first began serving in 2023 and was a mother of four, according to her bio.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed two people were on the flight.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it would investigate the crash.
